Diary of a Worship Leader pt. 2

Yes, you are a worship leader. It’s not the same with being a leader in offices or in an organization. Here, you are more like a co-worker with the congregation. So, you have a kind of rules to follow. It’s not for captivating you. It’s just a reminder that you are the leader and make sure nobody is wandering around. Like I said before, it’s a great job. It’s so great that we need to ask for the Lord to show us how to lead the people. But there are some rules to follow (based on my experiences and books I read):

  1. Make sure that the congregation knows the songs you choose. You don’t want to sing alone in front and many eyes just clap hands and stare at you, do you? You know one fact about the praise and worship session? The fact is the congregation REALLY wants to sing and enjoy the moment, so leaders, please help them. I don’t say that you can’t have a new song. I think one new song in one service is fine and plan to sing the new song again in a short time so the congregation can remember the tune and the lyrics, just like when we are at school.
  2. Don’t speak too much to make the congregation distracted. We are the leaders; not the teachers nor the preachers. Precise, full-meaning words and connected to the songs that we will sing can be a guidance to fully concentrate on the meaning of the songs. Every good song will lead the hearts to the beauty of the Lord and His church. We believe that the Lord will speak to the hearts through the songs, let them have intimate moments with the Lord.
  3. Don’t over-repeat songs. Maybe you like one song more than the others, especially during the worship songs, but really, just don’t sing it more than 3 times.
  4. Pay attention to the season your church in. We are supporting the season and helping the congregation to remember what season they are in. Worship leading is pastoring the congregation through music (I think I read this quote from Extravagant Worship by Darlene S.)
By posting this don'ts (mostly), I really don't mean to limit the work of the Holy Spirit. Free your spirit but remember, you lead the congregation, make sure that they are following the flow of the Holy Spirit.
